Quran copies many Syriac texts. See chapter 19 of “Wiley Blackwell Companion to the Qur’an, 2nd Edition”. Here are just a few examples: The story of God ordering the angels and Iblis to bow to Adam is from the “Cave of Treasures”. The details of Adam’s 2 sons is from the “Life of Abel”. The story of Abraham observing heavenly bodies, confronting his father and being thrown in the furnace is from the “Apocalypse of Abraham”. The stories of Joseph copy “Homilies on Joseph of Pseudo‐Narsai”, Midrash and Ephrem’s Commentary on Genesis. The Queen of Sheba story is from the “Targum Sheni of Esther”. The details of Virgin Mary’s life is from the “Protoevangelium of James”. The story of Jesus making life from clay birds is from the “Infancy Gospel of Thomas.”

What I Really, Really Need!

Diversification topic indexing for Koran in this blog. Imagine all the chapters of the Koran as scrolls hanging on the wall from left to right, chapters 1 to 114. Pull them down and show the text of each chapter from verse 1 down to the last verse of each chapter. Then I can thread a colour string from 1 passage in one chapter to another passage in another chapter, so combining all the passages on one topic is strung together by the string. The coloured string is a topic index.

I could do this by hyperlinking each new passage’s refutation to earlier passages and manually editing a link to the newer chapters. If I then have a topic page index, I can link to each refutation. So, I see Muhammad’s diversification of his verses, obviously not necessarily in order, as the Koran is in chapter-length order, not time order. This way, I can test some hypotheses. Does Muhammad’s “Diversification” of verse become simpler as it goes along? Or does it get more complex as the “revelation” proceeds?

I tried using WordPress tags and it’s difficult to settle on appropriate tags as Muhammad is so scattered in his speech, and Muhammad changes names for topics.
